NADMO distributes relief items to victims

Ashaiman, July 23, GNA --- Mr. Samuel Evans Ashong Narh, Tema Municipal Chief Executive on Wednesday presented relief items worth at 40 million cedis to the fire and flood victims in the municipality.

The items presented to 36 family heads for 300 victims from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), included 200 bags of cement, 10 packets of roofing sheets, 100 student mattresses, 100 plastic buckets and 100 blankets.

The beneficiaries, who fell victim to the disaster between April 2002 and June 2003 were from Adenta, Kpone, Ashaiman, Kakasunanka, and Communities one, five and seven.

Mr Alex Dorglo, Municipal NADMO Co-ordinator, said, while flood and fire victims have the sympathy of the government, those who live in flood prone areas and have refused to vacate are likely to be refused any relief items next time round.

However, NADMO shall continue to support people who are genuinely affected by disasters even though resources are out-stretched. The NADMO Co-ordinator advised the residents in the municipality to stop building or renting accommodation that are situated in water-ways, adding, "we must engage competent electricians to work on our wiring."

"Let us educate our children on how to use all electrical gadgets in our houses, and we should also acquire fire extinguishers in our homes to enable us to fight combat sudden firebreaks."

Mr Dorglo expressed his gratitude to the Tema Municipal Assembly, Oceanic Shipping Agency, Tema District Council of Labour and Okanta Clinic for providing the items, which were distributed at this occasion.

Commander Atta K. Adomako (rtd), Chairman of the Ashaiman Zonal Council chaired the function.
