Adansi West to spend 1.2 billion cedis on projects

Obuasi (Ash), July 13, GNA - The Adansi West District Assembly is to spend more that 1.2 billion cedis this year on a number of development projects under the assembly's share of mineral royalties. The projects include the construction of three unit classrooms each at Adomanu, Annorkrom, Adamso and Sansu as well as the building of a 16-seater vault chamber toilet at Dompoase.

Others are the construction of girls' hostels at Asare Bediako and Akrofuom Senior Secondary Schools and the building of staff quarters at Fomena T.I. Ahmadiyya Secondary School.

Mr Joe Boampong, District Chief Executive (DCE) who announced this at an assembly meeting at Obuasi said the assembly was also spending 56,175,000 cedis to grant scholarships to students while 100 million cedis out of the mineral royalties had been ceded to the Adansi East District Assembly to support its development agenda.

The DCE further announced that 971 million cedis had been released to the district under the poverty alleviation strategy to address poverty amongst the people especially in the rural communities. So far the amount had been disbursed amongst 91 groups made up of a total of 3,238 individuals, comprising 2,009 males and 1,229 females. Mr Boampong said the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs under its women development fund had also transferred various sums of money to the district for distribution to women groups.

These include 27,500,000 to 50 women farmers, 192 million cedis to 384 traders, 50,000,000 cedis to 100 women for gari processing at Nkoransa and 150 million cedis for 300 women.

The District Chief Executive said three agro-based cottage industries would be set up in the district to promote the cultivation of oranges, ginger and palm oil and that submissions on the projects had been made to the Ministry of Trade, Industries and the President's Special Initiatives.

Mr Boampong said to enhance cocoa farming in the district, the number of mass cocoa spraying gangs had been increased from 40 to 70 while 1,000 farmers had been selected to benefit from the high-tech in cocoa production.
