Trader Remanded For Having Fake Notes

Yendi (N/R), July 8, GNA - A Yendi Circuit Court has remanded Neidow Sandow, a 33-year trader, until July 27 for allegedly possessing fake currency notes with a face value of 1.350 million cedis.

Chief Superintendent James Bruce, Yendi Divisional Police Commander, told the court that the Police arrested Sandow with 103 fake 10,000 cedi-notes and 16 fake 20,000 cedi-notes.

He said a passenger, who was travelling from Yendi to Tamale, used one of the fake 10,000 cedis notes to pay for his fare and was arrested. Mr Bruce said upon interrogation the passenger whose name has been withheld for security reasons mentioned Sandow whom he alleged used the fake currency to purchase his yams at the Kuni, a farming community in the Yendi District.

He said a Police investigating team traced the fake currency notes to Kuni where a lot of them were retrieved from some traders. Mr Bruce said when the suspect's room was searched Police found more of the counterfeit notes in addition to some dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and a "SB" shotgun.

He appealed to the government to let the Information Service Department mount a campaign in both the rural areas and urban centres to educate the people about the circulation of fake currencies in the country.
