Lebanese community gives 16 GIJ students scholarship

The Lebanese Community has once again rallied support by way of awarding scholarship to 16 students of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).

In a short but impressive ceremony at the school’s campus in Accra yesterday, the Lebanese ambassador to Ghana HE Ali Halabi indicated that the gesture forms part of the Embassy and the Lebanese Community to support education at the tertiary level in the country.

He mentioned that every country’s success hugely depends on how resourceful its human resource, particularly the youth are, hence the gesture.

The Lebanese ambassador charged the beneficiary media students to esteem ethics of the profession in order to make a difference in society.

He noted that “…although Ghana has made considerable strides in advancing the course of the media, there is more to be done, It is in this regard that the Lebanese community decided to sponsor upcoming journalists who will uphold ethical standards and not succumb to mediocrity, in order to champion the nation’s development. Take your studies seriously in order to attain higher heights.”

Rector of GIJ, Wilberforce Dzisah noted that developing our nation depends on our human resources, one of the reasons which we are gathered here today; the scholarship will certainly build the capacity of our students and help Ghana as a whole.

“The Lebanese Community has been running this scheme for needy but brilliant student for the past four years and therefore should be commended. I must we are indeed grateful.”

The beneficiary students included Eugenia Akorfa Kumi, Emma Obiri, Richard Mawutor Dzikunu, Leonora Amakuor Akpey, Manasseh Sugarthan Annor, Jeffery Owureku Sarpong, Sheriff Appiah, all of level 400, and Tryphena Lizzert Ama Odehye Yeboah, Prosper Kofi Senyo, Edwin Kwakofi, Brigette Agozie, and Emmanuel Agorsor , who are in their third year.

The rest are, Maame Adwoa Ohenewaa Adu, Dominic Asitanga Awuni, Shadrach Odame and Erica Nartekie Kodjo, of level 200.

A beneficiary, Erica expressed profuse thanks to the Lebanese Community for the gesture.

The Lebanese community scholarship scheme was initiated in 2013, has so far benefitted hundreds of students, including Law students of the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, as well as dependents of fallen heroes in the military, police, immigration and prison services in the country.
