The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly Alfred Oko Vanderpuije says Ghana must review its laws on dual citizenship since the country stands to benefit immensely from it.

The Accra Mayor who has held both US and Ghanaian citizenship status for over 30 years renounced his US citizenship last Monday after he decided to pick forms to contest the Ablekuma West seat in the upcoming NDC primaries.

Ghana’s laws prevents Ghanaians who also hold citizenship status of other countries from holding key positions in the country.

But speaking in an interview with Bola Ray on Starr Chat Wednesday, the bearded-looking mayor said given the opportunity, he will push for Ghana’s laws on dual citizenship to be reviewed.

“I will push for that…let me tell you, there are people in America who want to come to Ghana to serve if the constitution allowed [dual citizenship].

“It will be of great benefit to Ghana if we allow dual citizenship,” Oko Vanderpuije said on Starr 103.5FM.

Mr. Vanderpuije also called on Ghanaians to give him credit for renouncing his US citizenship status.

“I am a very mature person…and you have to give me credit for renouncing my US citizenship…I know that when I came into this country to serve I didn’t have to renounce my [US] citizenship status”.
