Lions club donates to Glefe flood victims

Accra Golden Lions Club International, a secular, non-political organisation in collaboration with Ghana Red Cross Society, has donated relief items to 200 households in the Dansoman Glefe community.

The items include: 200 bags of rice, 200 buckets, 250 mosquito nets, 600 blankets, 13 boxes of key soap, 17 boxes of cooking oil and 200 bags of sachet water.

Mrs Abigail Amoah, Region Chairperson of the club, said the donation was made possible by a grant of $10,000 provided by the Lions Club International Foundation and GH? 3, 000 from Lions in Ghana for the victims of the June 3 flood and fire disasters.

“This donation is to meet the humanitarian needs of the victims and is part of our club’s goal of showing sympathy to people, especially pregnant women, children and the aged, who were badly affected in the Glefe community following the disaster.

“I must say this is the 4th time the Lions Clubs International Foundation is supporting disaster victims in Ghana,” she said.

Mrs Amoah said the donation was also the Lions Club’s effort to fulfil its commitment to support the poor, needy and socially marginalised groups in the society.

“There is the need to make the affected feel at home and always know that people care for them wherever they find themselves,” she said.

Mr Eric Asamoah Darko, Regional Manager, Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS), said the society provided technical assistance by undertaking the assessment of the victims to determine the worse affected ones and those who really qualified for the assistance.

He said the GRCS called on other benevolent individuals and organisations to collaborate and bring to an end the challenges the victims of the fire and flood victims are going through.

Some beneficiaries who spoke to the Ghana News Agency thanked the Accra Golden Lions Club International for the donation and said the support would help improve their living conditions.

On June 3, more than 150 people died with others losing their homes and valuables as a result of a twin disaster in Accra.
