Sunyani Central Rotary Club undertakes USD158, 000 projects

Rotary Club of Sunyani Central is undertaking a number of charitable projects estimated at USD$158,000 in the Brong-Ahafo region.

Mr. Kwame Ampadu Sasu, President of the Club disclosed in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during the 2014 presidential ball and fund raising ceremony of the club on Saturday in Sunyani.

The event was on the theme: “Lighting up Rotary in our communities; a shared responsibility”.

He said the amount covered completed socio-economic projects and on-going ones expected to be completed in May 2015 for some schools and communities located in the Sunyani Municipality.

Mr. Sasu who is also Head of the General Agricultural Department of the Sunyani Polytechnic cited that the projects comprised drilling of more than 40 boreholes for some selected schools, health facilities and institutions including the Sunyani Municipal Hospital, the Sunyani Central Prisons, Berekum College of Education and some communities in the region.

He said the Club had renovated the ceilings of Nyamaa Basic School in Sunyani town and the Municipal Assembly (MA) Basic School at Kotokrom, a suburb of Sunyani, adding that those schools were also provided with micro-flush toilet facilities as well as a quantity of computers and accessories to promote information, communication and technology education.

Mr. Sasu said other educational projects the Club had undertaken included a two-Unit classroom block for the Sunyani Urban Council Basic School, a fence wall around it and also a 25-seater water closet toilet facility with a fence wall for the Sunyani MA Basic School.

He said in 2013, the Club -in collaboration with Crouches for Africa; an international charitable organisation distributed a 40-feet container worth of mobility equipment including wheelchairs, walking sticks, crouches and walkers to the Sunyani Regional Hospital and the St. John of God Catholic Hospital at Duayaw Nkwanta as well as the aged and physically challenged individuals in the region and some parts of Ashanti.

Mr. Sasu stated that funding for the projects was from members own contribution through annual dues and levies with financial support of international collaborators which included the Rotary Clubs of United States of America (USA), Canada and the Rotary Foundation at the Rotary International headquarters in Chicago, USA.

He therefore appealed to corporate and charitable organizations and philanthropists in the country to either contribute in support of the projects being undertaken by Rotary Clubs in their localities or embark on similar projects on their own for the cause of the less privileged and the poor for improvement in their lives and well-being.
