Suhum Assembly gives to three schools

In an effort to raise the standard of education in its area, the Suhum Municipal Assembly has distributed an assortment of text books to three Senior High Schools (SHS).

The books, which were distributed to the schools – the Islamic Girls SHS, Suhum Technical and Senior High, and Coaltar Presby SHS – were donated to the Assembly by the Tema Rotary Club, through the instrumentality of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Samuel Fleischer Kwabi.

Speaking at separate presentation ceremonies, the MCE paid glowing tribute to the Tema Rotary Club for the contributions towards the socio-economic development of the nation, as well as teachers in the municipality for their yeoman’s call to duty.

According to him, despite the economic challenges facing the country currently, teachers in the area have remained resolute to their call, and urged them to maintain that position as the government fashions out measures to address the economic challenges, as well as their concerns.

He, however, appealed to the handful of teachers who wanted to bring the noble teaching profession into disrepute, to remember their oath and social contract they have signed with the people.

The MCE, who was once a teacher, assured the teachers in the municipality of the commitment of hi office to support both teachers and students in the bid to raise the standard of education for as long as he would remain MCE of the area.

In addition to the books, the Suhum Technical and Senior High School, which also is the former school of the MCE, and the Acting General Manager (GM) of The Chronicle Newspaper, Mr. Ebo Quansah, was given a set of football jerseys.

The school further received 10 cartons of various books from a philanthropist as a fulfillment of a promise made during its 50th anniversary celebration. Whilst the Islamic Girls SHS also received 200 bags of cement and trips of sand to aid the re-construction of a classroom block that was badly damaged during a heavy storm some months ago.

Receiving the books and cement on behalf of the students, the Headmaster, Mr. Sherifatu Abukari, thanked Samuel Kwabi for his positive thinking and commitment towards the development of his school, and assured the MCE of putting the items to good use.

On the other hand, the Headmaster of SUTESCO, affectionately known as Apostle Dr. Kwakye Kwabena Yeboah, also expressed his thanks to the Assembly and also promised to put the items to good use. A SHS Two General Arts student, Master Ebenezer Adjei, in an interview with the Eastern File shortly after the presentation, thanked the Assembly for the books, since they would be of much importance towards teaching and learning.

He further appealed to the government, through the MCE, to release the government grants for the 2014/15 academic year on time. In a related development, the Assembly has donated bags of rice and 15 gallons of cooking oil to the Islamic community in the municipality towards the just-celebrated Eid-Ul-Fitr.
