UNDP Resident Rep calls on Environment Minister

Ms Gita Honwana Welch, Acting United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative, has expressed her organisation’s readiness to support Ghana in its quest for sustainable development.

“We are here to support priorities defined by the country. We will be ready to support you as soon as we know how you want to proceed,” she said.

Ms Welch made the remarks when she paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Mr Akwasi Oppong- Fosu at his office in Accra on Friday.

She commended the Ministry for its support to the UNDP, which gives relevance to the role and purpose of her organisation.

Ms Welch said the launch of the National Climate Change Policy and the National Environment Policy would make a significant impact and assured the minister of UNDP’s willingness to support Ghana in the implementation of the two policies.

Mr Opong-Fosu said the partnership between Ghana and the UNDP has been long standing.

He said Science, Technology and Innovation is key to Ghana's economic development and jobs creation, and called on the UNDP to sustain its support towards the policies of his ministry adding: “The ministry will continue to knock on your doors.”

Ms Welch takes over from Madam Ruby Sandhu- Rojon who has been appointed Deputy Regional Director of the Regional Bureau for Africa.
