Abandoned GETFund school project resumes

Teachers of the Atimatim Primary “B” have hailed the re-start of construction works on a six-classroom Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) block abandoned for almost six years.

The Headteacher, Madam Paulina Afriyie, said it would end the situation where they have been forced to operate from makeshift structures.

On completion, the teachers and the kids would be assured of adequate space for effective teaching and learning.

The job has now been awarded to Zintang Enterprise and is expected to be ready within four months.

The outstanding works involve fixing the ceiling, doors, windows and locks, plastering, building of washrooms and painting.

Mr. Yaw Brefo, the project supervisor, told a team of reporters of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that they would do everything to deliver the project on schedule, adding that they had received funds, and there could therefore be no excuse to delay the job.

The journalists had visited the school together with the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Kwaku Oppong-Kyekyeku Kaakyire, under STAR-Ghana’s sponsored media auditing and tracking of development projects to put a spotlight on how government’s resources is impacting the lives of the people, especially those in the rural communities.

The goal is to aid the promotion of transparency and accountability in local governance.

The DCE urged the contractors to ensure value for money and that shoddy work would not be accepted. Baffour Adu Asare, a member of the school management committee (SMC), said there could be no doubt that the project would significantly help to increase enrolment.

He appealed to the assembly to fence the school to ward off encroachers and stop people from using it as thoroughfare.
