Bring back our lecturers in 48hrs or... - GNUPS

The Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students (GNUPS) has declared its intention to demonstrate on Thursday, the 29th of May, 2014 to pressurize government to solve its impasse with their lecturers to enable them return to class.

The Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana (POTAG) on May 16th begun an indefinite strike to drum home its demand for the restoration of their Book and Research Allowance scrapped by the government in favor of a newly established National Research Fund.

But the students who are bearing the brunt of the strike action are unhappy with the posture of government in addressing the concerns of their lecturers.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Monday, the National President of GNUPS, Sulemana Hakim argued that students had paid their due and demanded that government followed suit by ensuring that lecturers were fully remunerated to attend to classes.

“For us as students we have fulfilled our part of the deal by paying our fees and availing ourselves for training, the least we expected was government’s refusal to settle its indebtedness to our lecturers,” he stated.

He said their 48 hour ultimatum is informed by government’s lackadaisical attitude at heeding the three month old threat of their lecturers to strike over the same issues.
