Tema Region records decline in criminal cases

Crime Statistics for the Tema Region indicate a steep decline in the number of reported criminal incidents, from 2011 to 2013.

Whilst 2011 recorded a total of 14,491 cases, 2012 recorded 11,635 cases, with 2013 netting 6,506 cases.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Olivia Turkson, in charge of Public Relations at the Regional Police Head Quarters, said at a news conference that the decline was a direct result of improved policing.

She however cautioned that despite the heavy presence of police all over, a typical example being the visibility of patrol teams, the police still depend greatly on the vigilance of people to effectively combat crime.

ASP Turkson said it is important for people to be each other’s keeper, and not ignore suspicious happenings.

She said the public should immediately notify the police on their emergency numbers, upon suspicion of criminal activity.

She said the police would continue to intensify their efforts towards ensuring the safety of all and sundry.

In 2011, there were 107 robbery cases, 57 rape cases and 160 defilement cases. The rest are threat of death- 785, threat of harm- 869, stealing- 4,904, assault- 6422 and fraud- 1187.

2012 recorded robbery cases were 72, rape -46, attempted rape- three, defilement -90 and threat of death- 58

The rest are threat of harm- 114, stealing- 4,087, assault- 5438 and fraud- 1204.

In 2013, robbery cases were 37, rape -21, defilement -88 and threat of death- 202.

The rest are threat of harm- 494, stealing- 2392, assault- 2567 and fraud- 705.
