Police to set up 'Land Guard Unit'

A clash between some officers of the Ghana Police Service and men purported to be land guards and allegedly led by the Osu Mantse last Friday has forced the Service to bring back its ‘Land Guard Unit’.

Disclosing this to TV3 on Monday, Commissioner of Police (COP) John Kudalor, who is also Director of Police Operations, noted: “The land guard issue is now a menace. We are restructuring our operational units and the land guard issue is quite in the fore.”

He emphasized that the Service will set up a unit to specially fight the menace. “I am sure we are going to go back to the land guard unit. This is because a lot of land guards have [mushroomed] because of the sales of land,” he said.

He condemned Friday’s incident at the Abdul Nasser Road in Cantonments, explaining that the police has already launched an investigation into it.

He noted that 14 person were arrested and were sent to the Cantonments Police Station.

Meanwhile, the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Alhassan, has directed the Police Investigation and Professional Standard (PIPS) Bureau of the Service to look into the incident to ascertain whether there was any breach of police regulations.
