Multi-million cedi Nana Afua Kobi market inaugurated

Mr. Samuel Sarpong, the Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) had performed the ceremony to officially inaugurate the Nana Afua Kobi Market, popularly known as “Abinkyi” built for traders ejected from the old Race Course area.

Their relocation was to pave way for the construction of the $50 million “SUNSHINE CITI Mall” - the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s flagship project.

The new multi-million cedi market has more than 2,500 lockable stores, 6,000 sheds and facilities for a police post, fire service, banks, information centre and washrooms.

It was completed with mixed funding by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), private companies and individuals.

Mr. Sarpong expressed concern about the increasing rate at which traders were taking over open places in the metropolis and warned they would not be allowed to have their way.

The KMA would do everything to ensure that there was some sanity.

He advised traders who had been allocated the stores and sheds to abide by the rules and regulations as contained in the contractual agreement signed with the assembly.

Those, who refused to move in, would forfeit their stores and sheds.

Mr. Sarpong encouraged traders operating at unauthorized places in the various locations to patronize the market.

He commended the contractors “T and K” construction limited for the good job done.

Oheneba Adusei Poku, the Akyempimhene, gave the KMA high marks for the successful completion of the market.
