Churches are needed to help schools – Bishop Afrifah-Agyekum

The Most Rev Dr Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum, Catholic Bishop of Koforidua, has called on churches to support schools to enable them produce qualified and skilled leaders for the country.

Bishop Afrifah-Agyekum said this when he presented two computers to the Reverend Father Wieggers Basic Schools at their third Speech and Prize-giving Day at Nsawam.

He also called on the parents to promptly pay the fees of their wards for the authorities to run the administration of the school and urged them to provide the needs of their wards to enable them take their lessons without any hindrance

He said it was equally necessary for teachers and parents to instill the fear of God into the children so that they could play useful roles in the society.

Ms Margaret Damanka, Headmistress of the School, said the Junior High School was established in 1990 with 35 pupils and it has since been scoring 100 percent with many of the students making aggregate six.

She said the latest outstanding performance was in 2011 where the school again scored 100 percent in the Basic Education Certificate Examination and took the first position in the Akuapim South Municipality, first in all the Eastern Region schools and 27th position in the entire country.

Ms Damanka said because of the introduction of the capitation grant by the government and the high academic performance, the school is overwhelmed with enrolment and appealed to non-governmental organisations and public spirited individuals to help the school build additional classroom blocks to accommodate the pupils.

She also asked for assistance in the provision of computers for the students to cope with the global technological advancement in information communication technology (ICT) and library facilities and books.

Mr Mark Amoako Dompreh, Akuapim South Municipal Chief Executive, assured the school authorities of the government’s readiness to help the school develop additional infrastructure to enhance better teaching and learning.**
