Walewale-Gambaga roads awarded on contract for tarring

Nalerigu (N/R), Aug. 05, GNA – Mr Moses Bukari Mabengba, Northern Regional Minister, said Government had awarded the Walewale-Gambaga-Nalerigu road in the East Mamprusi District on contract as part of major steps in fulfilling the promise made to the people.

He said the Government would also start the construction of the Eastern Corridor roads very soon in addition to the construction of all other major roads linked to it to improve the socio-economic activities in those areas.

Mr Mabengba announced this at Nalerigu in the East Mamprusi District where the Interior Minister, Dr Benjamin Kunbour, on his way to Nakpanduri, paid a courtesy call on the Nayiri Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai, Overlord of Mamprugu Traditional Area.

Mr Mabengba said Ghanem, a local construction firm, had been awarded the contract to construct the Walewale-Gambaga road but did not give details of the contract sum, funding agency and its duration.

Nayiri Naa Abdulai, who was elated about the news of the road construction, said that particular road had been the major bane of the people and was therefore very grateful to the Government for the initiative.

He also commended the government for its development activities across the country but called on the Interior Ministry to take urgent steps at rehabilitating the Gambaga Prisons which, he said, was in a very deplorable condition and a death trap for the inmates.

Dr Kunbour said a team had already been dispatched to the prisons to investigate the condition of the building and it recommended that a new building be constructed and that efforts were underway to construct it.

He told the Nayiri that he was in the area to convey Government’s message of consolation and solidarity to the people of Nakpanduri in the Bunkpuru/Yunyoo District who were affected last year during a security operation aimed at arresting Johnson Kombian, a fugitive who had terrorised the people of the area.
