AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has awarded tertiary scholarships to 30 brilliant but needy students from its host communities under the second rollout of its Community Scholarship Support Scheme, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 50 since the programme’s inception.
The latest awards build on the initial cohort of 20 students supported during the first rollout, reinforcing the Mine’s commitment to expanding access to higher education and developing human capital within its host communities.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, the Director of Sustainability Management, Edmund Oduro Agyeiwaa, reaffirmed the Mine’s commitment to education as a key pillar of its 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP).
The scholarship scheme complements the Mine’s broader efforts to improve access to tertiary education, including its role in establishing the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Obuasi Campus to bring higher education closer to students.
Rev Professor Phillip Antwi Agyei, who represented the Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, commended the Mine for its continued investment in education and encouraged the beneficiaries to remain dedicated to their studies. He urged them to become future problem-solvers and ambassadors of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.
The beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the Mine for the opportunity, describing the scholarships as a significant investment in their academic aspirations and future careers. They acknowledged that the support would ease the financial burden of tertiary education and enable them to concentrate on their studies.
In addition to financial support covering their education for the duration of their respective programmes, the beneficiaries received laptops and backpacks to support their academic journey.
The Community Scholarship Support Scheme forms part of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine’s broader commitment to creating sustainable opportunities for young people through education and skills development.
Through its 10-year SEDP, the Mine continues to invest in human capital development, improve access to educational opportunities and support long-term socio-economic development in its host communities.
