Residents around the CMB Workshop area in Koforidua in the Eastern Region have raised concerns over alleged physical abuse of women at a gated residential facility reportedly occupied by 18 African nationals involved in network marketing.
The male suspects are alleged to have abducted some women into a self-contained building, where the women were reportedly subjected to physical abuse.
Residents say they became suspicious after repeatedly hearing noises and cries believed to be coming from women inside the apartments, particularly in the evenings.
However, they claim they were unable to access the premises because the property was gated.
According to the residents, they subsequently reported the matter to the Municipal Chief Executive for New Juaben North, Isaac Adongo, who alerted the police.
The police reportedly arrested the suspects following the intervention.
However, residents allege that the suspects and the women were returned to the same building later that evening because of a lack of adequate cell space to accommodate the suspects.
The alleged return of the suspects and the women to the premises has raised concerns among residents about the safety of the women and the handling of the case.
Residents are calling for a thorough investigation into the activities at the facility and appropriate measures to ensure the protection of the alleged victims.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged abductions and abuse, the identities and nationalities of those involved are yet to be established.
Residents however say the suspects could either speak English or any local language.
