The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has begun rehabilitating Awudome Cemetery, including the reconstruction of sections of its perimeter wall and improvements to pedestrian access, landscaping, and the surrounding environment.
The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, announced the progress of the project after inspecting the ongoing works, which are intended to improve security, accessibility and the movement of vehicles and pedestrians around the cemetery.
The project involves demolishing and rebuilding sections of the existing perimeter fence wall, alongside landscaping, pavement construction, kerbing, gravel surfacing, and the development of designated pedestrian walkways.
According to the Mayor, work began with site clearing and dewatering to remove accumulated water that had inundated parts of the project area.
Construction is currently focused on the eastern section of the cemetery's perimeter wall, particularly the stretch adjoining the main road opposite the State House, where reconstruction work is progressing.
Allotey also disclosed that additional improvements would be carried out around the cemetery's main entrance, including raising sections of the existing fence wall to improve its condition and create a more uniform boundary.
Beyond the perimeter wall, the rehabilitation project is expected to transform the cemetery's frontage through landscaping and pavement works designed to make the area more accessible and orderly.
The landscaping component will include the development of lawns, installation of kerbs, gravel surfacing and the construction of pedestrian walkways.
The Mayor said setting-out works had already commenced, with designated areas for lawns, kerbs, gravel surfaces and walkways marked to guide the next stages of construction.
The proposed walkways are also expected to improve access to the mosque area and an existing water kiosk constructed by the AMA.
The pavement and gravel works are intended to facilitate movement around the cemetery's frontage while improving the condition and appearance of the surrounding environment.
The rehabilitation forms part of efforts to improve the cemetery's physical infrastructure, strengthen its boundary and provide a more accessible environment for visitors and other users of the facility.
