A man has sought to correct a widely held belief that Takoradi is the capital city of the Western Region.
In a viral video sighted by GhanaWeb on October 10, 2026, the man explained that Sekondi is originally the capital city of the region; however, because the adjoining cities have evolved to become a twin city over the years, people have been misled to believe that Takoradi is rather the capital city of the Western Region.
According to him, the frequent use of Takoradi alone when referring to the regional capital overlooks Sekondi, which he insisted is an equally important city which merits acknowledgement and development.
In the video circulating on social media, the man stressed that Sekondi is the capital of the Western Region and urged those bringing projects to the area to ensure that both names are recognised.
“The city is Sekondi-Takoradi, but people always mention Takoradi as if Takoradi is the capital of the Western Region,” he said.
He explained that Sekondi and Takoradi form a twin city, adding that references to one part of the city should not exclude the other.
He further appealed to individuals and organisations planning projects in the region to avoid focusing on Takoradi alone, particularly when referring to development initiatives.
“So, I'm pleading with you that when you are bringing a project to the Western Region, don't ignore Sekondi and mention Takoradi while the office of the Regional Minister is at Sekondi and not Takoradi; at least mention them together as Sekondi-Takoradi,” he added.
