Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpor, and the Member of Parliament for South Dayi and Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, have appealed for urgent support for more than 4,000 residents displaced by flooding in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region.

The appeal follows the overflow of the River Dayi after torrential rainfall, which has submerged homes, destroyed properties and disrupted the livelihoods of residents in several communities.

Tsekpor, who visited some of the affected areas, said the scale of the disaster required urgent assistance from individuals, organisations and other stakeholders to support residents who had been forced to leave their homes.

He said more than half of Hohoe Zongo had been submerged, with several residents moved to temporary shelters, including classrooms, as authorities worked to find more suitable arrangements.

The MP assured affected residents that relief assistance would be provided within the next three days, while urging them to remain calm and prioritise their safety as the water level continued to rise.

Dafeamekpor also joined the call for support, describing the situation in Hohoe as distressing and appealing to Corporate Ghana to assist in providing relief for the flood victims.

In a post on X, the South Dayi MP appealed to corporate organisations to help settle the affected residents, saying more than 440 houses were completely under or surrounded by floodwater.

“We are also appealing to Corporate Ghana to assist us to settle the flood victims, with over 440 houses completely under or in water,” Dafeamekpor said.

The Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Raphael Kumagah, said about 400 houses and 4,282 households had so far been affected by the flooding.

He explained that the floodwaters were not originating solely from Hohoe but were also coming from neighbouring Togo, causing the River Dayi to overflow its banks.

According to him, residents who had built close to the river were among those badly affected, with their homes, belongings and properties inundated by the rising waters.

NADMO, he said, had secured temporary accommodation for some of the displaced residents in school buildings and a mosque and had provided mattresses, food and drinking water as immediate relief.

Kumagah said the temporary measures were being implemented while the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, the Municipal Chief Executive, Prosper Kumi, Tsekpor and NADMO continued assessing the situation to determine a comprehensive relief package for the victims.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Chief Executive, Municipal Physical Planning Officer, engineers from the Assembly and NADMO officers are on the ground assessing affected communities and documenting the extent of the damage.

The assessment is expected to guide further interventions, inform measures to mitigate the impact of the flooding and help prevent a recurrence.

Tsekpor has also expressed sympathy to families who have suffered losses, urging affected residents to remain calm as authorities and other stakeholders intensify efforts to provide assistance.
