An aspiring Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Lower Manya Krobo Constituency in the Eastern Region, Godwin Oblanda Totroku, has pledged to provide motorcycles and regular logistical support to branch organisers if elected, arguing that strengthening the party’s grassroots structures will be critical to its fortunes ahead of the 2028 general elections.

He said branch organisers were the “vertebrates” of the NDC’s grassroots organisation and must therefore be adequately resourced to enable them to mobilise effectively and execute their responsibilities.

Oblanda, currently Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Director of the Youth and Employment Agency (YEA), made the pledge when he met with newly elected branch organisers as part of his campaign to secure the chairmanship of the party.

The meeting, he said, was aimed at congratulating the organisers on their successful elections, encouraging them in their work and outlining what they could expect from his administration if they supported Team Oblanda.

“As organisers, they are the vertebrates of the party organisation, so they need to be resourced to become very instrumental and effective in performing their duties,” he said.

According to him, mobility remained a major challenge for grassroots organisers, particularly those required to move between communities and engage party members.

He therefore pledged to provide motorcycles to organisers to improve their mobility and enhance their ability to undertake party mobilisation activities.

“They need to be mobile, so we will get them motorcycles. They should also form an association so that every three months we will meet. Meeting them will enable us to resource them and give them what they need to do their work effectively,” he said.

He said the proposed quarterly meetings would provide a platform for the organisers to discuss their challenges, receive support and improve their effectiveness as the party prepares for the 2028 elections.

Oblanda also promised to introduce a certification system to recognise the contribution and performance of branch organisers.

He said the initiative would be linked to training through the NDC’s Ghana Institute of Social Democrats, which equips party activists with knowledge of the party’s history, ideals, aspirations and organisational structures.

The Assembly man for Odumase-North Electoral Area argued that formal certification would not only recognise the organisers’ contribution to the party but could also provide them with an additional qualification that could be useful in their personal and professional lives.

“The NDC is having a school, the Ghana Institute of Social Democrats, which trains party activists on the history, aspirations and work of the party. We will give them that certification,” he said.

“Certificates are very valuable in life. Whatever you are going to do, when you apply for a job, they ask you to come with a certificate. So we will give them certificates as a form of acknowledging their support to the party.”

The chairmanship aspirant further appealed to the organisers to support his campaign, saying their role would be indispensable to his efforts to secure victory in the internal elections.

He said his ability to implement his proposed policies would depend largely on the cooperation of the grassroots organisers.

“As an aspiring chairman, I cannot get my duties done without them being the organisers. I met them and told them what my aspirations and policies are, and what they are going to gain if they vote for me,” he said.

Oblanda also cited the NDC’s return to power as an opportunity to deepen participation and ensure that party members who contribute to its electoral success are meaningfully involved.

He said his proposed support package was therefore intended not only to motivate organisers but also to build a stronger and more effective grassroots machinery capable of delivering electoral success for the party.

He expressed confidence that the organisers would support Team Oblanda and work towards securing his election as chairman.

Former Member of Parliament for the area, Michael Teye Nyaunu, also threw his support behind Oblanda, endorsing his candidature and urging party members to rally behind his bid for the chairmanship.

Nyaunu’s endorsement adds significant political backing to the campaign, with the former legislator expressing confidence in Oblanda’s ability to strengthen the party’s grassroots structures and provide the leadership needed to mobilise members effectively ahead of the 2028 general elections.
