The Upper West Regional Security Council (REGSEC), led by the Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, paid a condolence and stakeholder engagement visit to Wechiau following the demise of youth leader Abu Tijani.

The delegation, which included the Upper West Regional Commander of the Ghana Immigration Service, DCOI Justice Ayensu Bonsomtwe, and the Deputy Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, DO I Adams Issahaku, first called on the Paramount Chief of Wechiau and his traditional council before visiting the bereaved family.

On behalf of the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Management Board, DCOP Yiribaare conveyed heartfelt condolences to the Paramount Chief, the bereaved family, and the people of Wechiau.



He assured them that the ongoing investigation by the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) would be conducted fairly, independently, and transparently to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Regional Commander appealed to residents to remain calm, exercise restraint, and continue to support the investigative process, emphasizing the Ghana Police Service’s unwavering commitment to accountability, professionalism, and the rule of law.

He also assured the community that the reported destruction of private property in the aftermath of the incident would be investigated separately and that anyone found responsible would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

Speaking on behalf of the Paramount Chief, Gurungu Naa Alhaji Osman Laribogu expressed appreciation to the Regional Security Council for the visit and commended the professionalism demonstrated by the security services.

He appealed to the youth and residents to preserve the longstanding relationship between the people of Wechiau and the security agencies by maintaining peace and cooperating with law enforcement authorities.

The delegation later visited the residence of the bereaved family, where condolences were officially conveyed on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police. As a gesture of solidarity, the team presented food items and a cash donation to support the family during the funeral period.

Receiving the delegation, the family head, Alhaji Haruna Alhassan, thanked the Inspector-General of Police, the Regional Security Council, and the security services for their compassion and support.

He expressed confidence in the ongoing investigative process and called for continuous improvements in policing to help prevent similar incidents in the future.

The Regional Security Council also inspected a private property that was vandalized following the incident. DCOP Yiribaare assured the owner that the matter would receive the necessary attention and that those responsible would be brought to justice.

Before departing Wechiau, the delegation interacted with security personnel deployed to the area, commending them for their professionalism and reminding them to continue discharging their duties with restraint, respect for human rights, and effective community engagement.

The visit concluded peacefully and successfully, reinforcing the commitment of the Ghana Police Service and the Regional Security Council to transparency, accountability, and constructive engagement with communities.



It also strengthened dialogue between the security services, the traditional authorities, and the people of Wechiau, reaffirming their shared commitment to preserving peace, security, and public confidence.
