The Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, Sampson Asaki Awingobit, has called on the government to promote the consumption of locally produced beverages by serving traditional drinks such as pito at the Presidency during official state functions.
According to him, promoting indigenous beverages at the highest level of governance would not only showcase Ghana’s rich cultural heritage but also create a stronger market for local producers.
Speaking at the launch of Bolga Pito, a locally brewed beverage, Awingobit lamented Ghana’s growing preference for Western lifestyles and imported drinks.
He argued that this trend has contributed to the increasing incidence of kidney and other related diseases.
He explained that pito is brewed from millet, a nutritious grain with significant health benefits, making it a healthier alternative to many commercially produced beverages.
Awingobit stressed that the time has come for Ghanaians to embrace indigenous products, beginning with the Presidency.
He believes diplomats and other state guests should be served locally brewed pito instead of imported beverages.
The producer of Bolga Pito, Madam Mary Awingobit, popularly known as Mamagee Baakope, said the initiative is aimed at reintroducing the traditional beverage to a wider market while creating employment opportunities and supporting Ghana’s economy through local production.
She expressed optimism that increased patronage of locally brewed drinks would empower small-scale producers, preserve Ghana’s cultural identity, and contribute to national economic growth.
