A newly constructed statue has been erected at the Effia Nkwanta Hospital Roundabout in Takoradi, covered and ready for its official unveiling, according to video footage circulating on social media on Monday, August 3, 2026.

The development follows the vandalism and destruction of a previous life-sized bronze statue of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the same location by unidentified individuals.

The over two-minute video shared by @SIKAOFFICIAL1 and credited to Baba Adam Media on August 3, 2026, shows the new monument in place at the roundabout near the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital.

"Today, August 3, authorities have brought a new statue to the site. It has not yet been unveiled, so it remains unclear whether the monument depicts the former president, a nurse on duty, or a regional dignitary. The public is awaiting the official unveiling to ascertain its true identity," the person recording the video was heard saying.

Akufo-Addo's controversial statue at Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital completely destroyed

The original statue was unveiled on November 6, 2024, during then-President Akufo-Addo's "thank you" tour of the Western Region.

It was erected to recognise infrastructure projects initiated under his administration, such as the rehabilitation of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, the Sinohydro three-tier interchange, and the redevelopment of the Takoradi Market Circle.

The monument faced early damage in December 2024, when a hole appeared in one leg; it was subsequently repaired.

In January 2025, shortly after the change of government, unknown persons completely demolished the statue, leaving its head and other parts scattered at the site.

As of Monday, the newly installed statue remains under cover pending an official unveiling ceremony. No formal statement has yet been issued by the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly or regional authorities regarding the identity of the figure depicted or the date of the unveiling.

The installation has already drawn mixed online reactions.
