The Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with the Municipal Security Council, has carried out a demolition exercise at Kan-Bola, affecting thousands of occupants.

Kan-Bola is a slum area at Sabon Zongo in the municipality that has existed for decades.

The demolition exercise follows an earlier warning issued to occupants about a week ago to evacuate the area ahead of the exercise.

The exercise is suspected to have been triggered by recent murder incidents in the area, which resulted in the deaths of two young men.

Speaking to OTEC News reporter Bismark Appiah Kubi Papilo during the operation, the Coordinating Director for the Assembly, Isaac Kwame Ellimah, said the illegal structures had become a threat to the security of the municipality due to criminal activities, which had led to the deaths of some residents.

When asked whether the occupants would return after the exercise, Ellimah said the Assembly had engaged the shared owners of the area to develop the land following the demolition to prevent the affected occupants from returning.

He stressed that the Assembly could take over the area if the key stakeholders, including OTEC FM, Melcom and Zuria, fail to develop it.

“We’ve asked the key stakeholders of the land to develop the area soon after the demolition exercise. If they fail to develop it, we will use the place as a parking area for vehicles arrested for unauthorised parking within the Assembly,” he stated.
