Assembly Member for the Wute Electoral Area, Wisdom Akpabli, has called for an immediate, independent and transparent investigation into a recent shooting incident involving the police at Logote Junction in the Volta Region.

In a statement issued on July 30, 2026, he alleged that some police officers fired shots at a private vehicle belonging to a man identified as Godwin Lavoe Sulleiman.

Akpabli claimed that the incident reportedly caused damage to the vehicle and left a woman travelling in it with injuries.

He further alleged that after the shooting incident, the officers involved used a civilian vehicle, which reportedly collided with and caused additional damage to Sulleiman's vehicle.

"Of even greater concern is the allegation that, following the incident, the officers involved used a civilian vehicle, which allegedly collided with and further damaged Sulleiman’s vehicle. It is further alleged that the said civilian vehicle was subsequently moved to the District Police Headquarters at Akatsi, where its number plate was removed," it stated.

The Assembly Member said the use of firearms by law enforcement officers requires strict adherence to professional standards, particularly when civilians are involved.

“The use of firearms by law enforcement officers is a matter that demands the highest level of professionalism, restraint and accountability, particularly where civilians, including women and children, are present,” he stated.

Akpabli stressed the need for the investigation to establish the identities of the police officers involved, the circumstances that led to the alleged shooting, and whether the use of firearms was lawful, necessary and proportionate.

"The investigation should establish: The identities of all police officers involved in the incident; The circumstances that led to shots allegedly being fired at Mr Sulleiman’s vehicle; whether the use of firearms was lawful, necessary and proportionate; The identity and ownership of the civilian vehicle allegedly used during the incident,” he said.

The Assembly Member urged the Ghana Police Service and other relevant authorities to treat the matter with the seriousness it deserves and ensure that justice, professionalism and accountability are upheld.

CALL FOR IMMEDIATE INVESTIGATION INTO ALLEGED POLICE SHOOTING INCIDENT AT LOGOTE JUNCTION

I, Hon. Wisdom Akpabli, Assembly Member for Wute Electoral Area, wish to express my grave concern over a disturbing incident which allegedly occurred on 29th, July 2026 at Logote Junction, involving a young man, Mr. Godwin Lavoe Sulleiman, his wife and children.

According to information available to me, Mr. Sulleiman was travelling in his privately owned vehicle with his family when some police officers allegedly fired shots into his vehicle.

The incident reportedly caused damage to his vehicle and subjected him and his family to a situation of extreme fear and potential danger.

The incident also left Mr Sulleiman’s wife with some reasonable degrees of injuries.

Of even greater concern is the allegation that, following the incident, the officers involved used a civilian vehicle, which allegedly collided with and further damaged Mr. Sulleiman’s vehicle.

It is further alleged that the said civilian vehicle was subsequently moved to the District Police Headquarters at Akatsi, where its number plate was removed.

If these allegations are established to be true, they raise very serious questions regarding professional conduct, accountability, the preservation of evidence, and respect for the rule of law.

The alleged removal of the vehicle’s number plate is particularly troubling because it could frustrate efforts to identify the vehicle and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The use of firearms by law enforcement officers is a matter that demands the highest level of professionalism, restraint and accountability, particularly where civilians, including women and children, are present.

No citizen should be made to feel that the very institution mandated to protect life and property can act without accountability.

I therefore strongly call for an immediate, independent, transparent and impartial investigation into the incident. The investigation should establish:

The identities of all police officers involved in the incident;

The circumstances that led to shots allegedly being fired at Mr. Sulleiman’s vehicle; whether the use of firearms was lawful, necessary and proportionate;

The identity and ownership of the civilian vehicle allegedly used during the incident. Why the said vehicle’s number plate was allegedly removed and who authorised its removal;

Whether any attempt was made to alter, conceal or interfere with evidence relating to the incident; the extent of the damage caused to Mr. Sulleiman’s vehicle; and whether the conduct of any officer involved amounts to professional misconduct or any other offence under Ghanaian law.

This is not a call for anyone to be condemned without due process. It is, however, a firm demand that no individual, regardless of rank or position, should be above accountability.

The people of Wute and surrounding communities deserve a police service that protects them, treats them with dignity and operates within the law.

Where allegations of misconduct arise, they must be investigated openly and fairly, and where wrongdoing is established, appropriate disciplinary and legal action must follow.

I urge the Ghana Police Service and all relevant authorities to treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves and to take steps to reassure the affected family and the wider community that justice, professionalism and accountability remain fundamental principles of law enforcement.
