Residents of Onsonyameye in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region are appealing to government and stakeholders for a Junior High School facility, additional trained teachers and electricity for their community.

The appeal was made during the school’s Speech and Graduation Day held on Thursday, July 23, 2026.

How the school started

The Acting Headmaster of Onsonyameye Basic School, Joshua Nuamah Bebu, recalled that the school was established in 2019.

“I thank the community members for sacrificing their lives to put up the mud and bamboo structure to help the children in the area to end their long distances of accessing KG and primary education,” he said.

Before 2019, children in the farming community had to walk long distances to access basic education. With support from Ellembelle Complementary Education, residents built the current mud and bamboo structure that now houses pupils from KG to Primary 6.

Urgent challenges

Joshua Nuamah Bebu expressed deep concern over the fate of the first batch of pupils admitted into KG in 2019, who have now been promoted to JHS One.

“I am worried about how these new JHS One pupils will continue their education because the community doesn't have a JHS facility to accommodate them,” he stated.

He also disclosed that the school currently has only three trained teachers and no proper furniture from KG to Primary 6.

Adding to the burden, Onsonyameye has no electricity. “Our school children rely on torchlight for studies at night,” he noted.

The appeal

The community is appealing to the Government, Ellembelle MP Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Ghana Gas Company, the Ellembelle District Assembly, GES and NGOs to come to their aid.

“I am appealing to government to establish a decent classroom block for the community. I also appeal to GES to post more professional teachers to the school. Our children are very good in academics but they need government’s support very urgently,” Bebu pleaded.

Advice to pupils and parents

He advised the newly promoted JHS One pupils to “stay focused, disciplined and take their academic work seriously.”

He also urged parents and community members to continue supporting the school to prosper.

Farming of cocoa, oil palm and food crops remains the main occupation in Onsonyameye.
