A journalist with the Multimedia Group, Obremponba Kwame Owusu, has reportedly been left unable to walk after he was allegedly assaulted by military personnel enforcing the curfew in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region.

The incident is said to have occurred on the evening of Saturday, July 11, 2026, while the journalist was covering developments following the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) constituency executive elections.

In a statement issued on July 14, 2026, Adom TV alleged that Owusu witnessed military personnel assaulting civilians suspected of breaching the curfew and attempted to document the incident as part of his journalistic duties.

According to the statement, some of the soldiers confronted him, accused him of taking photographs and videos of their operations, and allegedly subjected him to a severe assault.

The media house said the journalist sustained injuries to his back, joints and other parts of his body. He was subsequently rushed to St Joseph's Hospital, where he remains on admission receiving treatment.

Recounting the incident, Owusu said panic broke out as people fled from military personnel enforcing the curfew.

"All that we could hear was that people were running for their lives. When we asked what the matter was, we were told the military were enforcing the curfew," he said.

According to him, supporters and onlookers who had gathered after the NPP constituency executive elections were among those trying to flee the scene.

"People who came to vote, onlookers or supporters of the various candidates were all around, and they were all running away. In the process, some of them collided with a motorbike. As a good citizen, I decided to support them so they could move on," he recounted.

Owusu alleged that while assisting those affected, some military personnel accused him of filming their actions.

"I saw the military coming towards me, saying I was filming them. They were struggling with me. They came to me, beating me and asking me to give them my phone," he said.

He added that officers from the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) and the Ghana Police Service intervened and rescued him from the alleged assault.

"As I refused, the BNI and some other police officers came to my rescue. All I felt was a sharp pain around my back and then my spine. I came to the hospital yesterday. In the evening, the situation became worse, so they had to admit me," he stated.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces is yet to publicly respond to the allegations.
