The Nzema East Municipal Assembly has strongly pushed back against allegations made by the Chief of Gwira Amgbansi, Nana Kojo Mensah, regarding the shooting death of a 45-year-old man in the area, describing the claims as false and unfortunate.

The Assembly issued a detailed rejoinder following media interviews by the chief, who accused the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) of involvement in the death of Angu Mensah, Abusuapanyi of Amgbansi, who was shot on Sunday, May 24, 2026.

In the statement, the Assembly clarified the background of the tension, revealing that the chief had been pushing for the revocation of a mining lease belonging to PRP Mining Company so it could be given to him.

The Assembly outlined the sequence of events as follows: "In 2025, Nana Kojo Mensah visited the MCE and security heads, demanding that the company’s lease be terminated and handed over to him because he had partners willing to support him in acquiring the concession. The request was turned down.

"The chief later approached the Regional Minister, who also declined and directed him to liaise with the MCE."

The Assembly noted that several discussions between the chief and the company proved futile.

“The chief, after his failed attempts, became livid for not being granted permission to operate on the company’s concession, hence his commentaries against the Assembly and the MCE,” the statement said.

The Assembly stressed that the regrettable shooting incident could have been avoided.

“Rather than using violence, the people involved might have easily remedied the preventable conditions that led to the shooting incident,” it noted.

It further stated that the culprits involved in the shooting have been arrested and are assisting security agencies with investigations.

“The company, PRP Mining Company, is a registered large-scale company with the necessary documentation that requires a company to mine, so, unfortunately, the revered chief will go above and beyond to discredit and undermine the efforts made by the MCE to resolve the matter,” the statement added.

The Assembly urged the public to disregard the chief’s assertions and called for calm.

“The Assembly remains resolute and urges the public to disregard the assertions uttered by the chief and call on the youth to adhere to the peace and co-existence principles that bind all across the country,” it said.

The Assembly also expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.

“The Assembly also sympathise with the family of the deceased as it is collaborating with key stakeholders to ensure that the perpetrators are prosecuted according to the laws of Ghana,” the statement concluded.

The statement was signed by Sulemana Bamutu Saaka, Municipal Coordinating Director, for the Municipal Chief Executive.
