Former Finance Minister Seth Terkper has urged young people to stop waiting for “perfect jobs” and instead prepare themselves with the right attitudes, skills and knowledge to thrive in the evolving world of work.
Speaking at the UFO Future of Work Conference on May 22, 2026, he challenged students and young professionals to take charge of their destinies by embracing hard work, innovation and continuous learning.
“Everything that we have heard here today will amount to nothing if we as young people do not pledge to take our destiny into our hands,” he said.
According to him, there is no such thing as a perfect job waiting for young people after school, stressing that preparation and practical experience are essential for success in the 21st century.
He encouraged students to “work before they actually work,” explaining that many young people across the world engage in different forms of work during vacations not only for income, but also to develop discipline, skills and strong work ethics.
Seth outlined what he described as the “ASK” principle to guide young people in their personal and professional development. She explained that “A” stands for Attitude, “S” for Skills, and “K” for Knowledge.
“Knowledge without skills in this 21st century will not take you very far. Skills without the right attitudes shaped by hard work, integrity and innovation will also not lead you to success,” he stated.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim encouraged young people to take responsibility for their future by developing the right attitude, skills and knowledge needed for success.
She urged participants to learn from global examples of innovation and hard work, stressing that young people should not wait for “perfect” opportunities before taking action.
According to her, preparation and self-development are essential for success, adding that many young people around the world engage in different forms of work during vacations not only to earn money, but also to build discipline, experience and a strong work ethic.
