Ga South Brigade residents demand urgent action over worsening sewage crisis

Residents of Ga South Brigade in the Ga South Municipal District are calling for urgent intervention over a worsening sewage and drainage crisis that has left parts of the community flooded with wastewater and exposed households to serious health risks.

According to a report by myjoyonline.com published on May 20, 2026, residents say the area lacks a properly engineered drainage system, resulting in the indiscriminate discharge of sewage and wastewater into homes, walkways, and open spaces.

Speaking on the situation, resident Jonathan Tetteh described the crisis as a long-standing environmental and public health concern that has persisted for nearly a year without a lasting solution.

He explained that the community’s terrain significantly contributes to the problem, as sewage from uphill sections flows downhill through makeshift drains with no proper outlet.

“The whole place has become unbearable. We walk through sewage before entering our homes, and the smell alone is disturbing. This has been going on for close to a year,” Tetteh said.

According to him, the problem worsened after a neighbour allegedly installed PVC pipes to channel wastewater, but the drainage system ended near his residence, causing sewage to overflow into his compound.

“A neighbour connected pipes to direct the wastewater, but instead of solving the issue, the sewage now ends up here. Anytime it rains or the water level increases, the whole compound is flooded,” he added.

Chorkor residents lament poor sanitation, clogged gutters

Tetteh further lamented the health implications of the situation, saying stagnant wastewater has created breeding grounds for mosquitoes and made outdoor activities difficult for residents.

“The stench is too much, mosquitoes are everywhere, and our children cannot even play outside safely anymore,” he said.

Residents say repeated complaints to municipal authorities and environmental health officers have failed to produce any meaningful or lasting intervention, despite several visits and assurances from officials.

“We have reported this issue several times. Officials come, inspect the place, promise to act, but nothing changes,” Tetteh stated.

According to residents, attempts to escalate the matter through the area’s Member of Parliament and other stakeholders have also yielded little progress, leaving the community increasingly frustrated.

They are therefore appealing to the Ga South Municipal Assembly to urgently construct a properly engineered drainage system to effectively channel wastewater away from homes.

“The only lasting solution is proper drainage. If nothing is done quickly, the sanitation situation here will become worse and affect more people,” Tetteh warned.

The residents are urging authorities to treat the issue as a priority to prevent further deterioration of sanitation conditions and possible disease outbreaks in the area.
