Fear and heartbreak have gripped some residents of Moree after strong tidal waves swept through parts of the coastal community, destroying homes and leaving dozens of families stranded.

Emergency officials say at least 80 people, including women and children, have been displaced after the waves tore through sections of the town on Saturday afternoon.

According to a report by asaaseradio.com, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) confirmed that at least 13 houses were destroyed in the incident, forcing affected families to flee with whatever belongings they could salvage.

According to officials, the destruction began around 3 PM, after reports emerged of buildings collapsing along the shoreline, as unusually strong waves pounded the community.

For many residents, the disaster unfolded within minutes, turning homes and personal properties into rubbles, even as frightened families scrambled for safety.

Emergency response teams made up of personnel from NADMO, National Security, the Ghana Police Service and the district assembly were quickly dispatched to the area to support rescue and evacuation operations.

Disaster volunteers also reportedly joined efforts to relocate victims to temporary shelters while rough sea conditions continued to threaten nearby homes.

Regional and district disaster management officials are said to becurrently overseeing relief operations and assessing the scale of destruction to determine the immediate needs of affected families.
