The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Senior High School (SHS) has recorded the death of one of its candidates in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The student is reported to have died after a brief illness during the examination period.
School authorities said they are mourning with the bereaved family while ensuring that the remaining candidates are given the support needed to continue their papers in a conducive environment.
According to a MyJoyOnline.com report published on May 13, 2026, the school also confirmed that a pregnant student is among those taking the WASSCE.
It added that another registered candidate has also discontinued schooling and is currently absent from the examination.
Despite these developments, the school said a pregnant candidate successfully sat the English Oral paper alongside her colleagues.
2026 WASSCE begins with over 500,000 candidates
“In addition, a pregnant candidate successfully participated in the English Oral examination alongside her colleagues,” the report stated.
A total of 1,022 candidates from the school are sitting this year’s WASSCE, with core subjects already underway across the country.
The Assistant Headmaster (Academic) and Assistant Examination Supervisor, Agyekum Kwaku, said the examination process at the school has so far been smooth and orderly.
He noted that the school continues to uphold a strict zero-tolerance policy on examination malpractice, with invigilators and supervisors ensuring full compliance with all examination regulations.
Other centres, including St Louis Senior High School and T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School, have also reported calm and incident-free proceedings as more than 500,000 candidates nationwide continue to sit the 2026 WASSCE.
