The traditional leadership and residents of Old Tafo in the Eastern Region have sent a strong message to the Abuakwa Municipal Assembly and the central government that mining has no place in their community.

The declaration followed an official notification from the Abuakwa Municipal Assembly informing the traditional authorities and local residents of plans by Parin Gold Limited to begin mining operations within Tafo and its surrounding areas.

In a swift and decisive response, the Omanhene of Akyem Tafo, Daasebre Adusei Peasah IV, convened a high-stakes emergency gathering in front of the Awansa Palace.

Addressing a large crowd of concerned residents and elders, the Omanhene made his position unequivocal, stating that no mining activities will be permitted within his jurisdiction.

"The collective interest, safety, and future of our community are not for sale," Daasebre Adusei Peasah IV declared.

The Omanhene issued a stern caution to his subjects and landowners, urging them to resist the temptation of short-term financial gains.

He warned that selling land to mining companies would jeopardise the safety and prosperity of future generations.

According to the chief, the environmental risks and social disruption associated with mining far outweigh any perceived economic benefits.

Community members who spoke at the gathering expressed fierce support for the Omanhene’s stance.

Speaker after speaker reaffirmed their commitment to protecting Tafo’s fertile lands, water bodies, and rich cultural heritage from the degradation often left in the wake of mining activities.

"We have seen what mining has done to other communities. We will not let that be the story of Tafo," said one resident, echoing the sentiments of the crowd.

The Abuakwa Municipal Assembly has not issued a formal response to the Omanhene’s declaration, however, the message from the Awansa Palace remains clear; Tafo stands for preservation, unity, and a future free from the scars of mining.
