A devastating windstorm has ripped through the Gusheigu Municipality in the Northern Region, destroying homes, damaging schools and displacing scores of residents across more than 20 communities.

The storm, which struck without warning, tore off rooftops and left many households exposed to the elements. Victims are now seeking refuge in temporary shelters as they begin to count their losses.

A report by metrotvonline.com on April 11, 2026, indicates that several key educational institutions were among the hardest hit.

“Gusheigu Senior High School, Digbla Primary School, Zinnindo Basic School and Gusheigu Nursing and Midwifery Training College all sustained extensive damage,” the report said.

In some schools, entire classroom blocks and offices have been left without roofing, bringing academic activities to an abrupt halt.

Authorities say the situation poses a significant risk to both students and teachers, especially with ongoing rains threatening further deterioration.

The destruction has disrupted teaching and learning, leaving school authorities scrambling to find alternative arrangements under difficult conditions.

Residents say the scale of devastation is beyond their capacity to manage and are appealing for immediate intervention to support reconstruction efforts and restore basic services.

Local officials have since commenced assessments to determine the full extent of the damage as affected communities begin the long road to recovery.
