A violent clash over a farmland in the Krachi Nchumuru District of the Oti Region has left one person dead and six others injured.
The incident, which occurred between the Konkomba communities of Wurenja and Beposo, also led to the burning of several houses belonging to the Nchumuru people, displacing residents and heightening tensions in the area.
Mr Martin Kofi Anato, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Krachi Nchumuru, disclosed to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the conflict involved two Konkomba communities disputing ownership of a piece of farmland.
He explained that the District Security Committee (DISEC), in collaboration with traditional authorities, had earlier intervened and directed both parties to refrain from farming on the land until a final determination was made.
The DCE said one of the factions allegedly defied the directive and proceeded to cultivate the land, triggering a violent reprisal from the opposing group.
Mr Anato stated that the confrontation resulted in one fatality, while six others sustained varying degrees of injury.
He gave assurance that the situation is currently under control by security personnel.
“We have deployed security personnel to the area to maintain peace and order, and we are working closely with traditional leaders to resolve the matter amicably,” he said.
He added that the body of the deceased had been deposited at the Kete-Krachi Government Hospital morgue, while the injured were receiving treatment at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chinderi.
The DCE appealed to the feuding communities to exercise restraint and allow due process to take its course.
He cautioned that individuals engaging in further acts of violence would face the full rigours of the law.
