Students of Sibi Jato Kparekpare D/A Junior High School in the Nkwanta North District of the Oti Region are facing serious challenges after strong winds damaged parts of their classroom block nearly a year ago.

The storm reportedly tore off sections of the school’s roof, leaving several classrooms exposed to the weather and unsafe for use.

According to a report by adomonline.com on March 16, 2026, some of the damaged roofing sheets hangs loosely, posing a potential danger to both students and teachers.

Due to the limited number of usable classrooms, students have been forced to crowd into the remaining sheltered spaces to continue their lessons.

They have had to arrange their desks and books in areas they believe are relatively safer, while lessons are often disrupted when it begins to rain.

“Teachers and students say the situation has made learning extremely difficult, as there is constant fear that the weakened structures could collapse,” the report said.

The Assembly Member for the area, George Konja Bingan, has expressed concern over the lack of action to address the problem despite repeated appeals to authorities.

He noted that the deteriorating conditions are already affecting school attendance, with some parents choosing to transfer their children to other schools while others keep them home to help on farms.

Bingan has therefore called on the government, particularly President John Dramani Mahama and the Nkwanta North District Chief Executive, to urgently intervene and fix the damaged classrooms.

He warned that failure to act quickly could result in a preventable disaster.

Students of the school have also appealed to authorities to come to their aid, stressing that although they are eager to learn, the current conditions make it difficult for them to do so safely.
