'He came at the right time' – Asamankama State B’ School hails philanthropist

The headmaster, management and pupils of Asamankama State B’ School in the Offinso South Municipality of the Ashanti Region have praised UK-based Ghanaian philanthropist, Richard Agyare, for renovating and repainting the school’s six-unit primary classroom block.

According to school authorities, the facility had been in a deplorable state for several years, creating an unsafe and unconducive environment for teaching and learning.

The recent renovation and painting, they say, have transformed the school and restored hope among pupils and teachers.

Speaking after the inspection and handing over of the renovated block, the immediate past Headmaster, Charles Boakye Ansah, disclosed that the school building had not been painted for more than a decade and that the classroom floors were badly damaged.

He explained that despite several letters written to individuals and relevant authorities for assistance, no support was received until Agyare was recently contacted.

“The school had been struggling with this renovation challenge for years. I personally wrote to several institutions but nothing came out of it. It took Mr Richard Agyare, who had just received one of our letters, to respond swiftly. Today, the primary block has been beautifully painted and renovated solely through his support,” he said.

Ansah, who retired barely a month ago, expressed profound gratitude to Agyare, popularly known as Akwasi Poku, and his team for the timely intervention.

“He has done marvelously well. We are very grateful and we pray that God blesses him and grants him success in all his endeavours. We also appreciate his team who played key roles in this work. We believe there are still other challenges he may help us address in the future,” he added.

The Acting Headmaster, Samuel Agyei Kodua, also commended Agyare for the gesture, describing it as a huge relief to the school community.

However, he made a passionate appeal for further assistance, particularly for the pre-school block.

Quoting from Oliver Twist, Kodua said the kindergarten block had deteriorated to the point of becoming a “death trap,” forcing school authorities to relocate the pupils to a temporary space for safety reasons.

“We sincerely thank Mr Richard Agyare for the many good works he continues to do for Offinso and its neighbouring communities despite living in the UK. We humbly appeal to him, through his team, to help us renovate our KG block, which is currently unsafe for the children,” he pleaded.

He also appealed to other well-meaning individuals and organisations to emulate Agyare’s example, stressing that government alone cannot address all the challenges facing public basic schools.

Through Agyare’s intervention, the school building has now been beautifully repainted, while the damaged floors have been repaired, creating a safer and more conducive learning environment.

Speaking on behalf of the philanthropist, the Project Coordinator, James Nkansah, popularly known as Principal, said Agyare has always been committed to supporting communities whenever legitimate needs are brought to his attention.

He explained that after receiving the school’s letter, Agyare instructed his team to visit the facility, where they were shocked by the poor condition of the classrooms.

“When we visited the school, what we saw was worrying. After briefing Mr Agyare on the situation, he did not hesitate to step in and offer support, as he always does when the need is genuine,” Nkansah said.

He noted that Agyare’s benevolence is well known in Offinso and surrounding areas, citing his support for skills training programmes for the youth, borehole construction, school renovations and start-up capital for small businesses.

On the request to renovate the pre-school block, Nkansah assured the school authorities that the concern had been noted and would be communicated to Agyare, expressing confidence that he would respond positively.

In appreciation of his continuous support for education and community development, the school presented a citation to Richard Agyare through his team.
