The Governing Council of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), led by its Chairman, Rev Stephen Wengam, has paid separate working visits to three sectors under the Service.
They are, the Greater Accra Regional Command at the Ministries in Accra, the Tema Regional Command, and the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
At the Greater Accra Regional Command, Rev Wengam commended officers for their diligence and dedication to duty, urging them to continue upholding professionalism and excellence in the discharge of their mandate.
The Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Immigration Madam Beatrice Okpoti, outlined several challenges facing the Command, including inadequate office space, staff accommodation and vehicles.
In response, Rev Wengam assured officers that the Council will soon launch an initiative aimed at mobilising public and private sector support to address these pressing needs.
He emphasised that safeguarding Ghana’s borders remains the top priority of GIS.
An open forum was held, during which officers expressed their grievances and concerns.
The Comptroller-General of GIS, Samuel Basentale Amadu, reaffirmed the Service’s readiness to project Ghana positively on the international stage.
During an open forum at the Tema Regional Command, Rev Wengam urged officers to remain vigilant and patriotic in fulfilling their duties to safeguard the nation’s borders.
He appealed to corporate organisations, businesses, and religious bodies to support the Service by donating essential working tools and sponsoring the construction of office facilities, given the limitations of government funding.
As part of the visit, Council members toured the construction site of the new ultra-modern office complex for the Regional Command.
They identified lack of vehicles, insufficient office space and inadequate staff accommodation as the most critical needs of the region.
The Comptroller-General of GIS, Amadu, encouraged officers to shun corruption and use available resources judiciously.
At KIA, Rev Wengam assured the public of GIS’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of Ghana’s borders.
He reiterated that the upcoming Council initiative will mobilise resources from both public and private sectors to strengthen the Service’s capacity.
He noted that current government allocations remain inadequate to meet the Service’s growing needs.
Welcoming the delegation, the Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Immigration (Dr) Noah Ahomka Yeboah, highlighted the significant contribution of GIS to national revenue generation.
He also mentioned persistent challenges such as inadequate office space, insufficient staff accommodation, limited vehicles and inadequate tools required for effective operations.
A staff durbar was held to allow officers to voice their concerns and engage directly with the Governing Council.
The Comptroller-General of GIS, Amadu, condemned the recent killings of some GIS officers and called for peace in conflict-ridden communities.
