Asubone (E/R), Aug. 19, GNA - Over 450 people were rendered homeless at Asubone Rail in the Kwahu-West Municipality when their houses were flooded following a five-hour torrential rain in the area on Tuesday.
Seventy-three buildings were affected, which developed cracks and are on the verge of collapse.
The affected people were putting up with friends and relatives in the town.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Nkawkaw, Mr Seth Agyei-Baah, popularly known as Saba, on Thursday presented a number of relief items with support from the district assembly including 16 bags of rice, eight bags of maize, four bags of beans, 60 pieces of blankets and poly mats, mattresses, buckets, cups and plates to the affected people.
Presenting the items on behalf of the Municipal Chief Executive, the Finance and Administrative Sub-Committee Chairman, Mr Dickson Achirem Amofa, advised the youth to undertake communal labour by desilting the drains to avoid a reoccurrence.
He advised the affected people not to rush to occupy the affected buildings since some of the walls could easily collapse to cause another disaster.
Nana Ampomah Danso, Chief of the town, thanked the assembly and the MP for their immediate assistance and gave assurance of fair distribution to the affected people.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) branch chairman of the area, Alhaji Mohammed Yaro, commended the government and the MP for the quick response to their plight.
