AMA boss visits La 'bola' site

Accra, April 21, GNA - Mr. Stanley Nii Adjiri Blankson, Mayor of Accra on Monday said the World Bank has made available funds to compensate occupants of the land where the Kwabenya landfill was sited to enable actual construction work to begin on the project. He noted that, although the first phase of the project was completed four years ago it had been difficult to complete it due to lack of funds.

He said the necessary precautions would be taken for effective work to begin.

Mr Adjiri Blankson disclosed this when he and Sheikh I.C Quaye, Greater Regional Minister visited the La Dadekotopon area where heaps of rubbish had mounted for over two months.

He said the project would employ local stone crackers to create local employment and when completed, it would last between 15 and 18 years.

Sheikh Quaye said clearing the huge accumulated rubbish in the area would pave way for the construction of the lane linking the main Accra-Tema beach road.

Dr Francis Sowah, NPP parliamentary candidate for the area who facilitated the visit said the heap had been a source of worry to the community due to the many health hazards it posed.
