La Presby gets book and computer laboratory

Accra, Feb. 15, GNA - HarperCollins (Ed Correct) Publishers, a publishing company in the United Kingdom on Friday donated a computer laboratory and books worth over 111,000 pounds to the La Presbyterian Senior High School to facilitate teaching and learning. The bookshop and the computer laboratory would also serve other surrounding schools.

Mr Ashley Daniel Lodge, Corporate Responsibility Manager, HarperCollins said the company established a relationship with the school in 2006 which led to the organization of a series of workshops on teaching methods.

He said the company would create a sustainable relationship with developing countries such as Ghana to help in their development, adding, "we didn't choose schools with high status-we chose schools needing help and support".

Dr. Francis Sowah, NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Dadekotopon Constituency noted the need to revamp education in the area adding, "any community which neglects or fails to educate its children and youth eventually finds itself on the brink of doom and destruction". He said the area had long been a cradle for education, which had produced many prominent men in the society.

Dr. Sowah, also the Head of Law Faculty of Zenith College said the economic hardship facing the area was as a result of the relegation of education to the background and added that, there was the need to revamp education in constructive and serious manner.

Mr. Benjamin Akrasi, Headmaster of the school enumerated teaching materials, transportation, and infrastructural as challenges facing the school and lauded the contribution of the company.

Alhaji Swalah Ahmed, PTA Chairmen of the school expressed gratitude to parents who contributed in diverse ways to refurbish the building used for the projects. 15 Feb. 08
