Eastern & Greater Accra fight over Akuse

The Manya Krobo District Assembly in the Eastern Region has at a meeting decided to defy all odds to hold its second general assembly meeting at Akuse where there is a dispute over the ownership of the town between them and the people of Osudoku in the Greater Accra Region.

The assembly resolved to hold the meeting as an indication of their claimant of the Akuse town. This dispute has been there for years with both sides resorting to legal means to rest the impasse, but issues seem to get worse day in day out.

There has been occasion where residents of both sides were involved in a free for all brawl, with people sustaining various degree of injuries all in the name of the ownership of the area.

A source close to the Sunday World revealed that the misunderstanding between the two sides is as a result of who to benefit from compensation to be given out by the Volta River Authority.

Due to this, our source added that compensation from the Volta river authority is sent to the coffers of the Central Government.

Our source also revealed that the Electoral Commission recognises Akuse as part of the Manya-Krobo district. This could be established as results from the last and previous general elections saw it going to the people of Manya.

The argument put up by the people of Osudoku is that the chief of Akuse is a Ga and was installed by the Ga traditional council to rule over the area. On the other hand it is known that the area falls within the jurisdiction of the Member of Parliament for Lower-Manya constituency.

Our source also revealed that a legislative instrument guiding the ownership of lands show among other things that Akuse town is a bonafide property of the Krobos. The Dodowa town,as claimed by the Krobo was part of the eastern region, but seem to be part of Accra.
