Minister visits rainstorm disaster victims

Asotwe (Ash) May 10, GNA- Mr Emmanuel Asamoah Owusu-Ansah, Ashanti Regional Minister, on Wednesday inspected and assessed the extent of damage caused to properties at Asotwe in the Ejisu-Juaben district following a severe rainstorm that hit the community on Tuesday. The roofs of parts of the community's basic schools were ripped off, trees planted on the school compound including Teak, mango and Accacia have been uprooted, whilst about 54 families have had their roofs ripped off.

Other houses either collapsed or flooded rendering most of the people homeless.

Many people were seen moving up and down in search of temporal places of abode, while others complained that they had not eaten because they were completely confused by the disaster.

The Regional Minister who was accompanied by Mr Osei Assibey Antwi, Deputy Regional minister and the District Chief Executive expressed their sympathy to the affected families.

He urged the District Assembly to immediately rehabilitate the classrooms for the children to continue with their studies. Mr Owusu-Ansah noted that nobody could predict the occurrence of any disasters and so when it happens all logistics should be diverted to help the situation.

He assured the school children that the school would not be closed down and that classes should continue until the roof is repaired. Mr Clement Manu, the District Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) said there were no casualties and that about 200 people have been affected by the disaster, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon.
