Aspiring assemblywoman condemns reported cases of violence against women

Nkawie (Ash), Sept. 25, GNA - Miss Cecilia Tumtuo, an aspiring assembly member for Nkawie-Panin Electoral Area has condemned the increasing reported cases of violence against women and torture of children. She said reports of gruesome murders of women by their spouses over alleged infidelities were serious concern to fair-minded and meaningful Ghanaians.

Speaking to some women traders at Nkawie-Panin in the Atwima-Nwabiagya District on Friday, Miss Tumtuo regretted that some violent men usually got away with atrocities against their partners in many communities, while some responsible community leaders looked on unconcerned. She said wife-beating, arbitral divorce; child torture and neglect had become increasingly, serious issues, which must be urgently addressed.

She, therefore, suggested for the early passage of the Domestic Violence Bill into law to protect the image and dignity of women in the country. Miss Tumtuo, however, commended the Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs for its prompt reaction to the many reported cases of violence against women and reiterated its caution to women to be careful of the partners they choose. She called for an intensive campaign by civic organisations, religious leaders and organised women groups to combat the canker.

Miss Tumtuo advised women to lead exemplary lives worthy of emulation by the youth and refrain from acts that bend to ridicule the beauty, integrity and image of womanhood. She also advised women to make good choices during the impending district assembly elections and select persons with integrity, who were capable and willing to spearhead the crusade to promote the emancipation of women.
