Nkubem Assemblyman co attacked by masked men

Saltpond (C/R), Sept. 21, GNA -- The police at Saltpond in the Central Region are hunting for the assailants of Mr Francis Ejaaku Donkor, seeking re-election as assembly member for Nkubem Electoral Area in the Mfantseman District, who was attacked and wounded at the weekend. Briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Saltpond on Tuesday, Police Inspector Patrick Yeboah, Station Officer, said at about 03:45 hours last Sunday, he received a call from Mr Donkor that he had been attacked by two masked men and needed medical attention.

Inspector Yeboah said he therefore, rang for an ambulance service from the Ghana National Fire Service at Abonko near Mankessim, which conveyed the victim to the Saltpond District Hospital. Speaking to the GNA at the Hospital, Mr Donkor who had just completed his four year term as assemblyman and was seeking re-election, stated that at about 3:45 hours on Sunday, he was awakened by some unfamiliar voices.

According to him, he heard the words: "Some thieves are removing the corrugated iron sheets covering the underground water reservoir." He said he woke up to go to the local Police Station to ask for the services of some policemen who would help him prevent the alleged removal of the roofing sheets.

Mr Donkor said about 100 meters to the Police Station he met two masked men who told him that they had been hired to kill him and without any provocation, one of them hit him at the back of his neck and he fell down, adding that 93the assailant pulled a knife and cut part of my left arm, but his accomplice prevented him from stabbing me with the knife=94 Mr Donkor said.

He said his shout for help attracted a watchman from a nearby Ahmadiyya Primary School who was approaching to save the situation, but the two assailants had absconded before he could reach the scene. A Police source said no arrest has been made, but investigations were continuing.
