70 teachers vacate post for voters registration exercise

Begoro (E/R), May 11, GNA - More than 70 teachers in the Fanteakwa district have vacated their posts to take part in the on-going revised voter registration exercise by the Electoral Commission (EC).

The Fanteakwa District Director of Education, Miss Mary Animwah, announced this at a meeting with headteachers at Begoro on Wednesday. She expressed concern about the effect of such a situation on the academic performance of the pupils, noting that the absence of the teachers for the two-week exercise would have a toll on the already precarious educational standards in the district.

Miss Animwah pointed out that as much as teachers could be asked to perform other national exercises, the EC should seek permission from their employers so that the teacher's extra-curricular services should not be at the expense of the education of the pupils.

She warned that the directorate would not take kindly with teachers who get recruited in future for national programmes without prior approval. Miss Animwah urged the EC to consider recruiting retired civil servants and the unemployed in future exercises when schools are in session.
