Youth urged to embrace volunteerism

Mr. James Gunu, Akatsi North District Chief Executive (DCE) has reiterated the need for the youth to embrace volunteerism as a pillar in national development.

He was addressing a send-off breakfast meeting at Ave-Afiadenyigba for 51 EP University College Students who did a month’s voluntary teaching service in some selected basic schools in the area.

Mr Gunu observed that there were hidden treasures in voluntary service.

“Though volunteerism might appear not beneficial to the one involved, its future benefits for all are enormous and it was one way the advanced countries and their citizens made it”, he said.

This is the second time a group from the EP University taught in schools in the district as part of efforts to raise standards.

Mr. Gunu was happy that the voluntary teaching service had helped to improve BECE results last year to 38% from 17.6% in 2013.

The DCE said a certificate of appreciation will be issued to the volunteers by the Education Directorate, and lauded the communities for supporting the volunteers with accommodation and rations.

Ms Bless Onyehe, Leader of the Volunteer Group was grateful for the support given them.

She observed that the main challenge of the pupils was their poor standards in the English Language.
