Wreath laying ceremony held for war heroes in Kumasi

Kumasi, Nov 11, GNA - A solemn wreath laying ceremony to mark the Remembrance Day, for soldiers killed in wars and peacekeeping operations in troubled parts of the world, was held at the Cenotaph in Kumasi. On parade, were contingents of the Ghana Armed Forces, Police Service, Prisons Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Customs, Excise and Preventive Service, Immigration Service and the Veteran Association of Ghana (VAG). As the clock struck exactly 1100 hours the last post was sounded followed by a period of silence and then the reveille.

In all, four wreaths were laid amidst the rendition of traditional dirges by the military band.

Mr Kofi Opoku-Manu, Ashanti Regional Minister, laid the first wreath on behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, next was Brigadier General Chris Kwadwo Ocran, General Officer Commanding the Northern Command, for the Ghana Armed Forces and other security agencies. Baffour Asare Owusu Amankwatia V, Bantamahene, laid a wreath on behalf of Asanteman and ex-Sergeant Samuel Ofori, Chairman of Ashanti VAG, laid a wreath on behalf of the Veterans.

Ninety-six year old war veteran, Corporal Gustav Opoku, read the Binyon verses and Christian, Muslims and traditional prayers were said for the souls of those who sacrificed their lives for world peace. Reverend Captain Ian Adjetey, Anglican Priest at Four Battalion of Infantry (4BN), the officiating Chaplain, called on individuals and organizations through out the world to prevent armed conflicts and promote peace and harmony.
